Toilet training comes down to giving your dog plenty of opportunities to go to the toilet outside and rewarding every success. Take your puppy to the same outdoor spot every 30 to 60 minutes while they're awake, immediately after waking, within 10 to 20 minutes of eating or drinking, and after every play session. Reward them the second they finish, supervise or crate them in between, and never punish your puppy for a mistake. That's the whole method. Everything below is timing, troubleshooting and the honest numbers.

How long does it take to toilet train a puppy?

Four to six months to fully house train most puppies; some may take up to a year. The routine itself usually clicks within four to six weeks, and a medium or large breed can often sleep through the night dry within a week or two of coming home. What takes months is physical maturity, which rarely arrives before six months of age.

Smaller breeds have less capacity and faster metabolisms, so they need more frequent trips and take longer. If you're near the one-year mark with regular indoor accidents, get your dog checked by a vet to rule out a urinary tract infection before assuming it's a training problem.

What age to toilet train a puppy

A puppy is able to hold on for roughly one hour per month of age: about two hours at eight weeks, three to four at three months. Full bladder and bowel control arrives at around five to six months. Even a puppy who understands the rules will produce the odd puddle before then; work with their body, not against it.

When to toilet train a puppy

Start house training your puppy straight away, from the first moment they come home, usually at eight to nine weeks (tiny breeds are often rehomed nearer twelve). Ask your breeder what surface the litter was toileting on; puppies transfer the habit far more easily to a familiar surface, and it's the kind of question a good breeder answers without hesitation. One caveat: many puppies hit a natural fear period around eight weeks, so your puppy may seem hesitant about the garden in week one. Stay calm and rewarding and it passes.

Best ways to toilet train a puppy

Set a good routine. Out first thing, after every nap, 10 to 20 minutes after eating or drinking, after play, last thing at night, and every 30 to 60 minutes in between. Puppies need far more toilet breaks than adult dogs. Feed at fixed times; what goes in on a schedule comes out on one.
Use one toilet spot. Take your puppy outside through the same door to the same patch, on a lead, every time. The scent of previous visits prompts them, and the lead means they toilet before they explore.
Add a cue word. Say "be busy", "wee wees" or "toilet" quietly while they're going. It becomes a request you can use on walks and at 3am in the rain.
Reward the instant they finish. Give them lots of praise and a treat within a second or two of every wee or poo in the right place, then a short play outside so toileting doesn't end the fun.
Keep a close eye on them. Free run of the house is how indoor accidents happen. When you can't watch them, use a crate or pen; dogs avoid soiling where they sleep.
Handle mistakes calmly. If your puppy goes to the toilet in the house and you catch them mid-flow, interrupt gently, scoop, take them outside, and praise if they finish there. Found later: say nothing and clean the area with an enzymatic cleaner or a warm solution of biological washing powder (avoid ammonia-based products, which smell like urine to a dog) so no scent invites a repeat. Never punish your puppy; scolding teaches them to fear toileting in front of you and to sneak off instead.

The fastest way to toilet train a puppy

Set an alarm and take them to the same spot every 30 to 60 minutes, plus immediately after waking, eating and playing. Speed is prevention: give your dog plenty of opportunities to go outside and no opportunity to go indoors, because a puppy who relieves themselves in the house has just been rewarded by the relief itself, whoever was watching. Puppies who learn they can go inside simply take more undoing.

Tips to toilet train a puppy quickly

Learn the signs your puppy gives when they need to toilet: sniffing the floor, circling, pacing, whining, or abruptly leaving the room. If you notice your dog doing any of these, take them out quickly. Keep a diary of eating, sleeping and toileting for the first week; a pattern appears within days and lets you pre-empt rather than react. If nothing happens outside within five to ten minutes, come back inside, pop them in the crate for ten minutes, then let your puppy try again. Reward when they finish, not when they start.

How to toilet train a puppy in 7 days

You can't fully toilet train your puppy in seven days, but one intensive week lays the foundation. The recipe: book the time off if you can, take them out every 45 to 60 minutes plus all the trigger moments, tether them to you or crate them between trips, feed the last meal by early evening, and lift the water bowl an hour before bed. Expect several misses on day one and steadily fewer through the week. By day seven you have a puppy who has learnt that going outside is where good things happen, with weeks of consolidation ahead.

Training a puppy with puppy pads

Puppy pads (sometimes sold as potty pads) are a back-up, not a method, and most trainers agree they slow things down: pads teach your puppy that soft, absorbent things indoors are toilets, and a rug or your duvet meets the same description. If you have a garden, skip pads and train outdoors from day one. Pads earn their place in three situations: flats without quick outdoor access, the pre-vaccination window, and times you must leave your puppy alone for longer than they're able to hold on.

Run the same system with the pad as the destination. One pad, in one quiet spot away from food and bed. Take your puppy to it at all the usual moments, cue, reward when they finish. Don't scatter pads around the home; that teaches anywhere indoors will do. If you use washable pads, pick ones that look and feel nothing like rugs or bedding.

Toilet train a puppy with pads or go outside?

Go to the toilet outside if you possibly can; it's faster and doesn't need undoing later. If circumstances force pads, keep the biggest rewards exclusively for outdoor toileting. To phase pads out, move the pad progressively closer to the door, then just outside it, then to the toilet spot, shrinking it as you go, and stop replacing it once the habit of going outside is established.

How to train a puppy to toilet outside

Go out of the same door to the same spot each time, puppy on a lead. Let them mooch about; both exercise and sniffing stimulate going to the loo. Say your cue as they start and praise the moment they've toileted, then release for a play so they learn that going outside earns the best rewards. Once vaccinated, take your dog out on walks with the same cue and rewards: puppies don't generalise, and a dog who performs perfectly in the garden may need to learn that pavements and parks are allowed too.

Toilet training a puppy at night

Plan for one or two overnight trips at first. Under ten to twelve weeks, most puppies can only hold on for two to four hours overnight; by three to four months, most manage a full seven to eight hours, and most stop needing overnight poos by 12 to 16 weeks on a sensible feeding schedule. Feed the last meal two to three hours before bed, lift the water bowl an hour before, and finish with a last trip outside.

How to toilet train a puppy at night

Put the crate in or near your bedroom for the first couple of weeks so you hear stirring or whining, which almost always means your puppy needs to go outside. Carry a small puppy straight out; a full puppy rarely survives the walk. Keep the trip boring: dim lights, no chat, no play, straight back to bed. A puppy who learns 3am is playtime will keep booking the slot. Once they're dry at the current interval, push the overnight trip about 15 minutes later each night until it merges with your alarm.

How to toilet train a puppy in a flat

Same system, one extra variable: when your dog needs to toilet, the journey matters. Carry your puppy through corridors, stairs and lifts while they're small, and pick one fixed spot outside the building; same route, same place, cue, reward. It's more legwork than a back door, but flat-raised puppies train just as reliably, and owners doing it well report the routine clicking within a couple of weeks.

Toilet train a puppy in an apartment

If you can't get outside fast enough, or your puppy isn't fully vaccinated, set up an indoor toilet rather than loose pads: a large litter tray or planted box on the balcony, in the bathroom or the kitchen, lined with the surface they'll eventually use outside (turf, gravel). Teaching a puppy to toilet in a tray works exactly like outdoor training: same trigger moments, same cue, same rewards. To transition, move the tray towards the door and then out of the building, take a piece of the used surface to the new outdoor spot so it smells right, and return briefly to trips every 20 to 30 minutes while the new location beds in.

Puppy toilet training regression

Regression, when a trained puppy starts having accidents inside the house again, is normal between four and twelve months. The most common cause is freedom granted too soon: a fortnight of clean floors feels like graduation, supervision relaxes, and the gaps get found. The fix is one to two weeks back on the full routine: more frequent trips, closer supervision, rewards for every success, enzymatic cleaning of every miss.

Dog toilet training regression: common causes

Five usual suspects. Developmental phases, peaking at four to five months (brain development, teething) and seven to nine months (adolescent hormones, especially in males). Too much freedom too fast. A slipping routine. Stress from change: a move, a new baby or pet, fireworks, building work. And medical causes, including urinary tract infections and parasites. If the change is sudden and frequent, or you see straining, blood in urine or increased drinking, rule out a medical cause before changing the training.

Submissive urination and excitement wetting

Not every puddle is a training problem. Excitement wetting happens mid-greeting or mid-play, usually while the puppy is standing or moving; joy has simply outrun a young body. Submissive urination is an appeasement response to nerves, and comes with crouching, a low tail, flattened ears or rolling over, often when someone looms or speaks sternly. For both: never scold (it makes both worse), keep greetings low-key, crouch side-on at their level, greet excitable puppies outdoors, and reward calm. Most puppies outgrow both as confidence and control mature.

When to ask a vet

Any puppy or dog whose toileting habits change suddenly should be checked. Book a vet appointment if training stalls despite weeks of consistency, or if you spot any of these: straining or crying when weeing, going little and often, blood in urine, drinking noticeably more, or leaking during sleep. Urinary tract infections are common in puppies and make holding on impossible, and conditions such as diabetes can present as failed toilet training. No routine fixes a medical problem.

Frequently asked questions

How long should it take to toilet train a puppy?

The routine settles within four to six weeks and full reliability arrives at around four to six months; some puppies, particularly small breeds, take up to a year. Dry nights often come within the first fortnight for medium and large breeds, which is progress, not completion.

How long to toilet train a puppy realistically?

A few messy weeks of intensive routine, a few months of steady improvement with the occasional miss, and genuine trustworthiness around the six-month mark once physical maturity catches up with understanding. Still mopping daily well past that, with a consistent routine? Involve your vet.

How to toilet train a puppy fast

Take them out on a timer every 30 to 60 minutes plus after sleeping, eating and playing, supervise or confine every minute in between, and reward outdoor success within a second of them finishing. Reward-based training on a relentless schedule is the whole method; there's no trick that beats doing it more consistently than feels reasonable for two to three weeks.

How to toilet train a puppy quickly

Same method, and you train your dog fastest by controlling the inputs: feed at fixed times, no meals within two to three hours of bedtime, and schedule water rather than leaving a bowl to be chugged before a long stretch indoors. Predictable in means predictable out.

How to toilet train a labrador puppy

Take your Labrador puppy to the same outdoor spot every 30 to 60 minutes, immediately after waking, eating, drinking or playing, and reward with a high-value treat and praise the second they finish. Supervise or crate between trips. The Labrador-specific adjustment is water: Lab puppies chug it, and a chugged bowl reappears within 10 to 15 minutes, so schedule water during intensive training and go outside straight after each drink. Their food motivation means a consistent routine usually works faster than in most breeds.

How to toilet train a dachshund puppy

Take your Dachshund puppy out on a lead every 20 to 30 minutes, immediately after waking and playing, and 15 to 30 minutes after eating; use a high-value treat, something like a sliver of cheese, and warm vocal praise the second they finish outside. Crate or pen them whenever you can't watch, and skip puppy pads entirely. Dachshunds, especially miniatures, are among the top 20 hardest breeds to house train, physically small and independent-minded, so expect a longer timeline than the 4 to 6 month average. Most "untrainable" Dachshunds are simply Dachshunds whose owners relaxed too early.

Is toilet training regression normal?

Yes. Most puppies regress at least once between four and twelve months, typically around four to five months and again at seven to nine months, driven by development and adolescent hormones rather than forgotten training. A week or two back on the full routine usually restores service. Sudden, severe regression, or regression with physical symptoms, warrants a check-up first.

Next steps: socialisation and settling in

Toilet training runs in parallel with the other big job of the early weeks: our guide to puppy socialisation covers what to prioritise before the 16-week window closes. If you're still choosing rather than mopping, our Verified Breeders start surface and routine habits before a puppy comes home, which is exactly the head start this guide builds on.
