What cookies are

Cookies are small files stored on your device. We use them to keep the site working, to count visits so we can improve the site (unless you object), and, only with your permission, for session recordings and to measure our advertising.

The cookies we use

Essential (always on)

Needed for the site to function — signing in, security, and remembering your cookie choice. These cannot be switched off.

Usage statistics (on unless you object)

We use PostHog (hosted in the EU) to count visits and clicks and see which pages and features help people find a dog. PostHog sets first-party cookies (and similar browser storage) whose names contain ph_, kept for up to a year. The statistics are anonymous and looked at in aggregate; they are not linked to your account, not used to build a profile of you and not used for advertising. PostHog processes them only on our behalf.

UK law (the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025) allows this kind of statistical analytics without asking first, as long as we tell you and make it easy to object. To object, choose Reject all in the cookie banner or switch off usage statistics below. We then stop setting these cookies and only keep an anonymous count of visits that stores nothing on your device.

Session recordings (optional, off by default)

With your permission, PostHog also records how pages are used (scrolling, clicks and page layout) so we can spot pages that confuse people. On-screen text and anything you type is hidden. If you are signed in, recordings and statistics are linked to your account so we can investigate problems you report. These run only if you choose Accept all or switch on session recordings.

Advertising (optional, off by default)

We use the Meta Pixel, provided by Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, to measure which of our Facebook and Instagram ads bring people to Companimal and to show our ads to people likely to find them useful. It sets the _fbp cookie (and _fbc when you arrive from one of our ads), each kept for up to 90 days.

If you accept, we also tell Meta directly from our own servers when you complete key actions such as creating an account, sending an enquiry or submitting a listing (Meta's Conversions API). Contact details such as your email address, phone number and name are converted into a one-way code (hashed) before they are sent. We never send the content of your messages or listings.

Meta acts as a joint controller with us for this collection; see Meta's Privacy Policy. Nothing is loaded or sent unless you accept, and you can withdraw at any time below.
